Waccamaw Publishers is a family-owned company which operates several community newspapers published in Horry County, South Carolina.
Originally brought in as a freelance artist and reporter — a position I took in order to help support my family while starting my own online publication — I quickly became a full-time part of this great team.
During my time here, I helped re-brand the Myrtle Beach Herald Visitor's Edition and launched Visit! — a bi-monthly publication which highlighted Myrtle Beach's top attractions and tourism news. During my tenure as editor and lead designer, Visit! quickly grew in circulation and sales, and in 2012 distributed more than 1 million issues at 200+ hotels and local businesses.
In addition, I leaned on my growing knowledge of the web to secure a role as Director of Internet Development for the company. During this time I helped bring Waccamaw Publishers into the 21st century by building and launching MyHorryNews.com, the company's first full-featured web portal, which combined coverage from its weekly newspapers, plus the Horry County Business Journal, Daily Shopper and Visit!
After nearly two years of growing my online publication, ListenUp Myrtle Beach, into a brand that resonated with fans of local music in the area, I was also able to partner with Waccamaw Publishers on a ListenUp Weekend Guide, a printed product which shipped to more than 25,000 readers each week as an insert inside the weekly newspapers.
As part of this talented staff of reporters and editors, I was involved in several award-winning projects that received statewide recognition including Visit!, ListenUp Weekend Guide and our High School Football Preview sections.
