As the season winds down, a new series of shows at Broadway at the Beach will pick up where summer left off. The Live After 5 concert series will kick off Sept. 22 with a variety of local and regional acts performing on the Celebrity Square stage beginning at 5 p.m. each Thursday this fall.
"Basically Burroughs & Chapin thought it would be a good idea to give a local crowd something to do early and wanted to showcase some of the bands in this area," said Craig Smith, owner of Blarney Stones Pub & Cigar Bar, who has helped organize the events.
Smith, who also owns Celebrity Square club Revolutions and dueling piano bar Crocodile Rocks, thinks the series will be a great chance to recapture some off-season fun in the area and cater to a happy hour crowd.
"We did it 10 years ago on Thursday nights and it was a great time then," said Smith.
The series will kick off with a performance by the Tim Clark Band on Sept. 22 and run through Mid-November, closing out with Scoot Pittman on Nov. 17. In between it will features longtime area rockers The Mullets , country group the Josh Brannon Band, the fun-for-everyone Neccesary Band, popular West Virginia-based act The Davisson Brothers Band , Southern rockers Black Glass and local favorites Ten Toes Up and N'Tranze.
This series is just one of many moves Blarney Stones has made recently to revitilize its live music offerings.
The bar has also renovated its indoor stage — a process the staff hopes to continue perfecting — and hosts a variety of live bands throughout the week. This summer the Latitude Band has held down Tuesday nights with a Jimmy Buffett Tribute show and Wednesdays have seen touring acts such as The Movement, Mike Pinto and Pasadenda roll through.
Weekends often carry back-to-back nights of big time cover acts such as N Tranze, Black Glass, Screaming Broccoli, Tokyo Joe and others playing to a packed bar of tourists and college-aged revelers.
The past two Saturdays up-and-coming Reggae/Roots rock acts Three Legged Fox and Zach Deputy have played to solid crowds at the bar, which also features a swanky martini bar upstairs overlooking the show floor.
"It's been going good for us," said Smith of Blarneys renewed focus on live bands. "We used to do it all the time, then we went to just Fridays with DJ Keith Nasty on Saturday and we found out through doing that more of the kids wanted to see bands and so we've brought back the live music."
