Once a celebration of national pride by Mexican immigrants living in America, the 5th of May has become yet another excuse for Americans to celebrate living in general.
As the Grand Strand embraces one of the spring’s biggest parties this evening, there are options for folks looking to take in some “heritage” of their own via tacos, tequila and tunes.
Here’s a look at some of the area’s most happening Cinco de Mayo events:
Cinco de Mayo Battle of the Bands

Abuelo's is looking to shake up the holiday landscape this year with its first-ever Battle of the Bands, which will see six original bands facing off for more than $1,500 in cash and prizes from Andy Owings Music Center.
The event, which will take place outdoors between Abuelo’s and Texas Roadhouse, will feature a variety of styles ranging from blues to reggae to hard rock, with a lineup that includes some of the area’s best bands such as Bitterseed, Coman Sproles & The Celtic Bluze, Treehouse, Eddie Ate Dynamite, Prowler and Below The Bassline.
In addition to great music, Abuelo’s will offer food and drink specials starting, a beer garden sponsored by Better Brands, a margarita station, prizes for attendees throughout the night and plenty of other fun.
14th annual Burrofest

The grandaddy of local Cinco celebrations, Burrofest has long been one of the area's biggest Cinco parties and this year the restaurant is aiming even higher by attempting to set a Guinness World Record during the annual event.
Not only does the day-long bash start earlier and go later than most, but during the party organizers are attempting to coordinate a record for "Most People Applying Sunscreen."
In addition, the event will feature plenty of music with Another Affliction performing from 2-4 p.m., Willhite from 4-6 p.m., "The Grand Strand's Best Cover Band" The Mullets from 6-8:30 p.m. and No Limit wrapping up the night from 8:30-11 p.m. and playing an indoor dance party afteward.
Nacho Hippo presents Edwin McCain

With the addition of Nacho Hippo Cantina Maximo to its offerings this winter, Divine Dining Group has thrown its hat into the ring with its first-ever Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Grand Park in Market Common, calling out a big name for the occasion.
Performing a free show will be S.C. native and frequent Grand Strand visitor Edwin McCain, accompanied by Sayer McShane, a two-woman rock/blues band out of Raleigh, N.C.
The party will feature food and drink tickets available for purchase to sample treats from all the Divine Dining Group restaurants along with Coca-Cola products and a variety of beers from Better Brands.
The family-friendly event will also have a Fun Zone for the kids including inflatable rides and face painting. No coolers are allowed and no outside food or drinks will be permitted.
Rosa Linda’s Grand Opening Extravaganza

After an eight-year hiatus, Rosa Linda's Mexican Cantina is ready for a grand return to the Grand Strand. The long time area restaurant, which served a blend of Tex-Mex, Italian & American cuisine for over 20 years before closing in 2003, will reopen Thursday in the former Hoof & Finz building.
Before gearing up for the crowds for the Cruisin’ the Coast Spring Bike Rally, owner Jason Favata will host a Cinco party to remember with a great slate of musical acts and the return of their famous margaritas.
Music will begin at 2 p.m. and will include performances by Drew Jacobs & The Sauce, Sawgrass, Octopus Jones and Ten Toes Up.
Uncle Tito’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Claiming to be “The Inlet’s Best Cinco Celebration,” Uncle Tito’s 2nd annual event will seek to wow fans with a musical lineup that includes Camden-based Latin Funk band The Mobros and Columbia-based Universal Republic recording artists Villanova.
The party will kick off in time for happy hour with “ridiculous drink deals” and a taco tent to satisfy attendees cravings for Mexican cuisine well into the evening.
Party with the KING! Family Style

Looking for a late night destination? The folks behind the former Tunnel Ultralounge will host a kickin’ Cinco de Mayo party which caters to the international crowd in the plush surroundings of Zulu Lounge.
The event offers VIP bottle service and a hookah lounge and the dancefloor will have 2 DJs — DJ TIMUR (Club There resident) and DJ BZ (former Tunnel resident) — blending the best of American mainstream and Euro house beats until the wee hours of the morning.
