Hey, guess what? It's Wednesday again and we're back with another dose of great local music for your listening pleasure. This week, in honor of a slew of acoustic shows happening this week, we've decided to pack Featured Listens with a trio of tracks to match. Take a look:
When Mary Met Vinny "Total Departure"
The husband and wife songwriting duo of Mary and Vinny Nicoletti were married in 2003, but have been making music together for over a decade. They are an active part of the acoustic music scene in Myrtle Beach and often bring their style of contemporary folk and rhytymic tunes to Fresh Brewed Coffeehouse and other spots around town.
In addition to their strong songwriting, the duo thrives on Mary's beautiful vocal range as well as an occasional myriad of instrumental accents including guitars, cello, mandolin, piano and more.
Although "Total Departure" is true to its title as being a far cry from the folk sound they often delve into, this atmospheric pop tune was too interesting to pass up. Featuring electronically-enhanced vocals and a driving drum beat as well as some sultry Spanish guitar, the track shows the range this group brings to the table.
This Is For My Friends "Neighbors Yards"
This is the first song off of the upcoming second album by St. James grad Alex Muller who performs as This Is For My Friends. Muller, who is currently attending school at Winthrop University, say he's been working on recording some track himself while at school in Rock Hill and hopes to finish up the album and do a CD release party once he's back in Myrtle Beach this summer.
"Neighbors Yards" is an easygoing effort that engages the listener in imagery of hot summer days gone by throughout its six-minute run. Muller also adds some interesting layering with effects and a drum machine to help mix up the acoustic base of the track.
Find out more about This Is For My Friends and Muller's show this Friday in our Behind the Scene interview.
Seth Thomas Band "Don't You Wanna Stay"
Since we've started this cover band contest, we've had a ton of response from people who LOVE hearing music they know. And while we'll never give up on pushing original music in this town we figured what's the harm in highlighting a cover from time to time.
This one come to us from country outfit the Seth Thomas Band which consists of Brian Garris (Bass), Tracy Abernathy (Drums), Vance Martin (Lead Guitar) and Seth Thomas (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar).
The track is cover of a great Jason Aldean song featuring former American Idol Kelly Clarkson, recorded by local sound man Bobby Campbell (aka Thee Music Guy) during a live gig in Conway. Thomas version of the track takes a turn for the tender with an acoustic arrangement and emotional-filled vocals.
