It appears that The Hazmat, an undergound venue which hosted shows in 2008-09, is back. At least for a night.
Now located in a storage space at 3901 Dick Pond Rd. (off of Big Block Road in Socastee) and called The NEW Hazmat, the spot will host a slate of four hardcore acts Friday night, including Long Island, N.Y.,-based Thrills & Kills, Columbia's In Regret, Wilmington's Overlooked and American Soil, which features members from Myrtle Beach and Wilmington.
According to Ian Geiger, one of the organizers at the original location on Holmestown Road, the venue closed in early 2009 when the landlord decided to sell the space. The organizers then hosted some shows at another spot they called The Hazmat 2, but never considered it a permanent location.
Nearly two years later, Geiger — who has since relocated north to N.C. — and crew are back at it and have once again found a spot to throw a show.
"Now that i live in Wilmington, The Hazmat is pretty much defunct," he said. "This is just a storage space that a friend of mine has and is willing to occasionally do some shows."
But even though the venue may remain more or less defunct, there's no reason not to enjoy this unqiue atmosphere while it lasts and help support some underground music while you're at it.
"It's a donations-based show with all the money going to support the bands," he said. "People of all ages can come out and enjoy a show free from the bar atmosphere and go as crazy as they want."
