When the curtain fell on one of Surfside Beach’s most popular live shows, Legends in Concert, many wondered what would become of the unused theatre space.
Now a new variety show will get the spotlight in the building that had housed the well-known tribute show from 1995 - 2010.
Celebrations Music Theatre, which producers of the show call a “hybrid musical theatre entertainment attraction,” will open its doors to the public for the first time tonight with its production, “SuperStarz! Live.”
The acclaimed “SuperStarz! Live” is a live production featuring tribute artists performing as well-known musical celebrities, including Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Garth Brooks, Liza Minelli, Whitney Houston and the Blues Brothers. The tribute artists perform accompanied by a live band and backup dancers.
“It is truly special because of the incredible new talent in conjunction with the sweet people who have come to work in every area of the theatre,” artistic director Greg London said. “The shows have heart, energy, and some of the best talent in the industry.”
In all, six full-length Broadway Shows will play on different dates throughout the summer, as well as three gospel-inspired shows and a production of “A Christmas Carol.”
“Geater Tuna,” a comedy show about a small town in Texas, runs March 11 – April 3; “A Broadway Celebration,” a musical revue, runs April 22 – May 22. A production of “Hairspray” will headline the summer from July 8 – Aug. 7.
The alternate productions run in addition to the “Stars in Concert” that has shows Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 6 and 8:30 p.m. until Dec. 31.

“The variety of shows is meant to provide fun professional theatre options for locals and tourists in a theatre with heart,” London said. “We are assembling talent from across the country to bring these shows to life in the south strand.”
Behind it all is the well-known artistic director, London. He formerly served as artistic director at the Palace Theatre in Myrtle Beach and has been awarded the Director of Merit six times by the Kennedy Center and American College Theatre Festival.
London will work in collaboration with an international team of producers, directors and choreographer to produce the theatre’s tribute artist show, Stars in Concert.
The collaboration includes the “father” of tribute shows, John Stuart, and the award-winning team of Bernhard Kurz and Jim Huntley direct from the Berlin, Germany production of Stars in Concert, supported by the talented choreography of Adam Pellegrine.
“Artistic excellence breeds success,” London said. “In our case, each member of our creative team brings his creativity, talent, past and achievements that will translate into musical and theatrical brilliance, tantalizing the palate of all who attend and elevating the level of the arts available across the region and beyond.”
Keeping a tribute show in Surfside Beach was a no-brainer to the production and ownership team. London said the area is ideal for this theatre because guests know they can take their families out and have a great night for not a lot of cost.
“We love what we do and the community that we do it in and know that our friends, neighbors and families will feel that at Celebration Music Theatre, it is a celebration.”
