Another week has passed and another N.C. band has advanced in the 3rd Annual Hard Rock Calling Battle of the Bands at Broadway at the Beach's Hard Rock Cafe.
Ocean Isle Beach-based band Aunt Polly's Glass Eye took round 2 of the battle, edging out the Wyatt Garey Band and Bamboo Forest to advance.
The evening began with Wyatt Garey Band on stagefor a soulful group of originals that embodied the down-home style of their city, as the competition's only Charleston-based participant.
Local band Bamboo Forest played second, starting with some straight-on punk, before showing range with some quirky tunes and more diverse numbers before ending with a rockin' rendition of their screamy original "You Get What You Pay For."
Though they didn't win the night's top honor, Bamboo Forest did bring the support of a few local fans and won over at least one of the judges with their set.
"I liked it cause there was only three of them," said Dino Capone, owner of Dino's School of Rock. "They played thier guts out, never stopped moving and we're really into what they were doing."
He said that while the band showed elements of Green Day, The Ramones and others, they managed to carve out a unqiue sound that was their own.
The eventual winners were the final act of the night, performing a well-put-together set of modern rock tunes highlighted by vocalist Brandon Bailey's enthusiastic stage prescene as well as good interaction between all five members.
"They were the tightest group up there," said judge Paul Grimshaw about the band. "But all of them were great."
Aunt Polly's Glass Eye will face off against last week's winner, Charlotte-based band Beyond the Fade and the winner of next Sunday's competition — which will feature Below The Bassline, Doctrine of Ethos and Sister Trish — in the March 13 finals.
We caught up with the five-piece band after their win for a quick introduction to what they're all about and their thoughts on competing in the contest for a second year:
