It's the first Music Monday of the New Year, and despite a tough couple of days over here at the ListenUp offices, we're here to help you kick off the work week with some of the most interesting news, commentary, links and music we've seen in the past week. This week's list features a new local duo act, a new way to share your music online and more.
Catch a new duo at Fresh Brewed
We had a chance last Tuesday to stop by Fresh Brewed Coffeehouse to watch a couple of local musicians, Rian Adkinson and Sam Favata play together in the coffee shop's front window/stage. Now we've covered both these guys in the past on the site, but watching them work together, there was a definite chemistry between the two, which Adkinson noted joking about being joined at the hip since they started playing together regularly a few weeks ago.
The two started off with a show at Drink! on Dec. 17, opening for Soundtherapy and it appears that for now, they will have a standing gig at Fresh Brewed every Tuesday if you want to go check them out. Also, nothing has been planned as far as we know, but Adkinson mentioned something about a label showcase being in the works after the former Nashville-based musician had spoken with one of his contacts from the music city about his current project. So stay tuned for details on that.
For now, checkout this video of them playing a song called "Die Just A Little" during Tuesday's set.:
To the cloud
We've been running across tracks hosted on Soundcloud, a site often described as "Flickr for audio," for some time now, but this week we finally broke down and joined the community which hit 1 million members in May and decided to find out a little more of what it's all about.
Soundcloud is a web startup based in Berlin, Germany, which launched in 2007, but has been recently busting out to a global market as a place for musicians and fans to share their music. We know what you're thinking "who needs another place to go to share music?" but honestly, the site is so much better in user experience than Myspace or all those RapidShare/FileShare sites, that you'll definitely want to check it out.
It uses app- and widget-based form of doing things that allows for songs to be embedded easily and in an attractive way all over the web and offers artists the ability to upload files of ANY SIZE to their profile. What's even better about it is there are plenty of local folks already involved in the community, so in addition to explore everything the community has to offer you can also interact with users right in your backyard.
Dolly turns pirate
Say what you want about the area's dinner shows and professional theaters, but the bottom line is these places draw huge crowds each year, and in our experience are pretty darn entertaining. That's why we though we needed to mention something about the recent closing of Dolly Parton's The Dixie Stampede dinner attraction.
The show, which featured singing and dancing and lots of equestrian antics, wrapped up it's 19 year run at the beach Friday evening and will be replaced by a new, pirate-themed show, Pirate's Voyage. The renovations will cost about $11 million and take nearly six months, with the show scheduled to reopen in June.
Check out more details and a full story on the Stampede's last ride in The Sun News.
When You Awake
This L.A. and London-based blog is worth checking out if you're a fan of country, alt-country, americana, rock, folk, or roots music.
They cover tons of different acts from both sides of the pond and have contributors from all over. We came across the site due to its semi-regular releases of mixtapes which feature covers of classic artists such as Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Neil Young covered by modern acts in a series of "________ Goes Twang" albums.
Very cool stuff if you like twangy tunes or covers, you ought to check them out here.
Track of the week: "Kush"
After years of Red Herrings and speculation about tracks, it appears that Dr. Dre may finally be able to release the highly-anticipated "Detox" album in 2011 after this first single featuring Snoop Dogg & Akon was released a few weeks ago. We feel like Dre has truly reached "needs no introduction" status and thus we'll simply post the track in case you hadn't seen it yet and let you judge for yourself.
