Photo shift: Flickr to Facebook
Monday, July 13, 2009 at 7:53AM I don't know what the heck is wrong with me. I've had a ton of good things to blog going on lately and still haven't been able to get myself over to do so. Something about the baby getting more out of control (you have to follow him constantly or risk him running into something), a new batch of games (Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, The Sims 3) and some fun summer catch up TV (Harper's Island, True Blood) and even getting outside to ride my bike have been soaking up all the free time I usually devote to this sort of thing.
Still, I wanted to wax poetic about something real quick.
I recently received a notice from Flickr that my pro account had expired and I will be losing some of my storage space for photos shortly. Since I started blogging I have always enjoyed putting my photos up online (regardless of how many people may or may not look at them) and I had always used Flickr to do so. But when I got this message my first instinct wasn't "Oh crap, I should renew that." it was "Who cares?"
This is not to say Flickr has become obsolete as a website or that no one is using it anymore, it was simply something for me that I realized I don't really need it anymore. I'm still a fan and you can't argue against the vivrant community and tagging features they have there, but that wasn't really why I joined in the first place...I simply wanted to post my photos in a place my family and friends could see them. And these days the most effective way to do that is Facebook.
I know that probably sounds strange coming from someone who refused to join the Facebook revolution until recently, but it really is the truth. With the massive user base on there and the ease of uploading straight from iPhoto to Facebook, there is really no reason to use anything else. If I upload the same batch of photos to both sites, I'm likely to get 1, maybe 2 comments tops on Flickr...while I could easily get a dozen different photo comments and updates on Facebook. It just seems a little counterproductive to keep uploading to both.
Not to mention the fact that I have my own hosted website with my own storage to upload images straight to here and create galleries at chrismowder.com if I so choose. I know this isn't really rocket science but it just one of those things that hits you when you've used a certain product, watched a certain show or visited a certain website repeatedly for the last few years and now realize you just "over" it.
So here's to Flickr...If you have a second click on the photo link below and check out the last set of pictures I plan to upload there, just a few recent shots of Miles so everyone can see how big he is getting.
