8 days in and nothing ...

I can't believe an entire week has passed in March without a single entry. I though I was back to 100% blogging capacity after averaging an entry every other day in Febuary, but some more "interesting" circumstances have gotten me back off the wagon.

Here's a quick update on what's been going on in the past week:

    • More cuts at The Sun News.

Here's the gist of it. What it really means is that 6 of my colleagues in the newsroom are on their way out and we are in the midst of some major changes. Everything from sending our pages to Charleston to be printed to reducing the size of the paper by consolodating some sections. I feel for those who got the ax, but as one of the people who needs to be heavily involved in what we do moving forward (very busy working on prototypes of all sorts of new pages and elements) it was hard for me to get caught up in all the sadness for too long. I simply have to keep moving and trying to put myself in the best position to continue to have a job.

    • Baby has gone crazy.

From just being able to keep his head up and crawl a few strides to traversing the living room in 5 seconds flat, Miles has reached the point of really being a handful right now and we are still trying to adjust to this new developmental stage. He's still not walking, but he's mobile enough to get into plenty of trouble now, from reaching for electric outlets (which are now covered with plastic plugs) to nearly pulling over plastic guitars and dishes full of knick knacks onto his head. Since he's in between stages right now, he still plays as if he doesn't know what "no" means, but we are starting to teach him and hoping it catches on sooner than later.

    • Blue Jackets pushing for playoff spot.

It's come to the point in the season where EVERY game matters, with Columbus teetering between the 5th and 8th spots in the playoff race, and thus I have been watching/listening to EVERY game. Hockeys is always a major interest, but has taken on much more importance this year as the Jackets truly have a chance to make the playoffs thus helping me achieve one of my 2009 resolutions (which Heidi reminds me aren't really resolutions but just things I want to do). I have tenative vacation plans to be in Columbus April 16-22 in order to catch the hypothetical "first-ever playoff game" in franchise history. I will probably make the trip regardless of what the Jackets do, but boy it would be much more interesting if they are playing. I just wish I knew the exact dates of the "game" now or if it were actually going to happen.

    • Weather is good for running, body is bad for running.

I haven't been doing much running since the half marathon, but have been using the winterish weather as an excuse. I've been going out once or twice a week since then but haven't taken it very seriously (which is actually nice, because I get to enjoy it then.) Finally at the end of last week, winter gave way to Spring -- hopefully for good -- and daylight savings time kicked in, giving me plenty more sunlight to run by. The bad news is that when I went out for the first time to take advantage of the weather I decided I felt so good I would push myself a bit. Instead of 5 miles I went for 7 miles. I Felt great for 90% of it, but in the last mile I did something to REALLY tweak my left calf muscle and now it's pulled/starined to the point where even walking hurts. I don't have much experience with this type of injury so basically my plan is to stretch it and rest for awhile...but it's just really frustrating because now that it's nice I WANT to run and can't.

It's also worth noting that my mom is back in town for awhile, so it will definitely be nice to have her around again, but I'm not sure how much we'll get to hang out with this work schedule not looking to let up any time soon. That's about it for now...looking forward to seeing what kind of change I can help stir up at the paper this week and the weekend should be fun as it's time for the always-entertaining South Carolina Press Association Awards banquet, which is in Myrtle Beach this year.

    Until next time...
